black drum

Winter can be a frustrating time of year. With up and down temperatures, crazy winds, and passing fronts, it’s definitely a hard time to find desirable conditions. Luckily, the black drum love cool weather and this week there was no shortage of action from these big, hulking uglies! From pitching deep in the mangroves to sight fishing, the occasional group of tailing fish, or even pitching baits around bridge pilings there is many ways to catch black drum!

Black drum are very slow and lazy predators. This can be challenging for some individuals that prefer artificial, but with all the scented baits on the market nowadays they have been one of the best methods on these fish. A Gulp shrimp, Mirrolure Lil John, or even a strip of Fishbites rigged on an 1/8 oz Mission Fish’n jighead and slowly worked along the bottom can be a great technique for these fish!

With the cooler temperatures, deeper holes with mangrove edges have been producing well, too. A dead stinky shrimp is always the best go to in this situation as well as around bridges, deeper docks, and any area with lots of structure.

I highly encourage everyone catch and release. The inshore fishery has had a lot of strain with added fishing pressure, water quality issues and so on. Preserving what we have could be vital towards a plentiful future.
