trip refish

Cool weather is starting to move in across the entire Space Coast, but it seems the mullet haven’t gotten the message. From Ponce inlet to Sebastian, mullet are still lingering around the inlets and jetties — and the bite is still red hot!

October is known for its redfish bite and the last month has definitely made it live up to its reputation. Fortunately, as we head in to November, the bite remains strong! Anglers can find these groups of redfish at the mouth of the inlets, around channel drop offs, and even along the beach scattered throughout the bait pods. The bait of choice has been larger mullet, live or cut, really whatever is accessible. As far as rigging goes, a 1.5oz sinker, 40lb leader, and a 6/0 circle hook depending on your bait size has been the “go to” rig!

For those fishing the river, these bulls can also be found in good numbers around shorelines with heavy drop offs, outside edges of spoil islands and large sandbars such as George’s bar, and tiger shoals in the Mosquito Lagoon. these fish are a bit more challenging and require much more patience and a stealthy approach — a long cast with half a blue crab is the best bet! If sight fishing opportunities do not present themselves, a fresh large bait placed along the drop offs in these areas can produce a great bite, too!

As the cool weather keeps coming, the bite will start to slow, so get out and take advantage of the great fishing while you can. Good luck to all and remember to handle these fish with great care, these are our breeders and are creating many more for future generations!
