Black Drum Bite Still Good

black drum

The black drum bite has continued to be very good. Tarpon are starting to show up in the inlet and the big news of the day is cobia along the beach. Hopefully they will stay around for a week or two maybe longer. Offshore the snapper bite has been very good still, hopefully the winds will stay calm for the next couple of weeks. I have days available if you want to get out and target some of these awesome fish. We can target the lagoon for redfish, trout, snook and black drum or fish along the beach for cobia. Let’s get out and catch you some!

Challenging But Productive Sight Fishing

mosquito lagoon

This past week has been a little on the breezy side making it a little challenging on the sight fishing but challenge expected. We have been doing well on redfish, snook and trout and it looks as though the weather is going to continue through this week so I do not see the bite changing. The bait has worked its way from the creeks out to the shallows and the redfish and trout have followed. The snook are still hanging in the deeper water around structure throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. Live shrimp, cut bait and finger mullet have been working well along with a variety of artificials. The extended forecast looks good coming into next week which will only increase the bite.

Front Shouldn’t Impact Bite

mosquito lagoon redfish

Just when I thought the fronts were finished here in the Central Florida area, there seems to be another traveling across the south this week. It doesn’t look like the temps are going to drop drastically, but it will bring some gusty conditions for a couple of days. With this front being on the minor side the bite should continue to stay strong throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. The shallow flats have been full of life with bait pods and fish milling around in and out the pot holes. They have been receptive to both artificial and live bait making for a good variety of baits to use.

Bait Starting to Arrive

redfish

With the warmer water and Mullett school starting to arrive the top order bite is turning on as well as a few tarpon are starting to show up here and there. With highs in the mid 80s over the next week look for the Mullett run to really get going in full effect. There have been rays along the beach with a few Cobia mixed in.

Follow the Wind to Find the Bait

redfish

So far this March weather has been a little unstable from frontal lines dipping down to wind and rain but it has not stopped the bite. The fish have been adapting well throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. Whichever direction the wind is pushing, the bait the fish have not been far behind. Live shrimp, finger mullet and cut bait have all been working well along with soft plastics and plugs early. The redfish, trout, snook and black drum have been staying pretty hungry.

It looks as though we may get another late season front move through but I believe this will probably be our last one for the year. We all know what comes next summer and that Florida heat.

“Not Yet…”

mosquito lagoon redfish

Just when you think Spring has arrived and the fish start to get into their Spring time pattern Mother Nature says “not yet” with a little winter blast of cool air. These late season fronts usually do not stick around long enough to effect the patterns of these Mosquito Lagoon fish. Look for the fish holding on the deeper edges and shorelines early then moving to the shallow flats and sand holes as the sun gets higher. We still have good amount of bait spread out from New Smyrna Beach south into Mosquito Lagoon and as the week moves on and gets warmer that bait will move to the shallows. The bite has been good on live finger mullet, cut bait and shrimp along with soft plastics, plugs and spoons.

Warmer Temps Turning Up the Bite

Warmer Temps Turning Up the Bite

The weather has definitely made a turn for the better this past week and looks to be sticking around through this week as well. With the warmer temperatures hitting us here in the Central Florida area it has really turned the fish on. The water has warmed up a bit pushing the bait up on the shallow flats and making the game fish follow. The trout and redfish have been hanging along the edges of the shallow grass flats where as the black drum can be found in the larger sand holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon. We still have a large number of blue fish throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach along with some snook that are starting to play. The bite has been good overall and with stable weather for a while it looks like it could continue for a little bit.

Nice Weather

It’s starting to look like winter is in the past and Spring has arrived here in Central Florida. The weather has definitely been quite nice with temperatures in the 70’s I could ask for just a tad less wind but we can’t get spoiled. The waters in and around New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon have been streaming with life. We have been catching trout, redfish, snook and black drum to mention a few. The bait can still be found throughout the waters and the fish have worked their way out of the depths back onto the flats . Plugs, soft plastics and spoons have been working well for artificial’s as shrimp, mud minnows and live mullet have been the key for live bait. The weather looks nice for the upcoming week which should definitely have the fish fired up.

Good Fishing with a Mixed Bag of Species

mosquito redfish

It seems as though we have finally hit a plateau of some nice weather for this upcoming week here in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We still have some cooler nights which is great with some low 80’s mid day. The fishing has continued to be good with a mixed bag of species from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. We have also been catching them on several different baits from artificial to live bait and even cut bait. I do not see the bite slacking off anytime soon.

Great Water Clarity for Sight Fishing

mosquito lagoon redfish

It looks as though our winter weather will be here for most of this week with cooler nights and 60’s to 70 during the days. With this little blast of cool air coming into Central Florida look for the fish to become really active throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The water clarity has been great making for some good sight fishing of redfish and black drum. The bait can still be found hanging in and around the deeper edges and holes. Those holes and edges are where you will find most of your schooling trout as the larger ones will be gathering warmth in the shallow pot holes. Small soft plastics, spoons and live bait have all been working well to trigger a bite.

Big Schools of Drum

black drum schooling

Big schools of black drum were what was on the menu for this past week of fishing with light wind and clear water. The black drum are feeding heavily and just about anything. We even had reports of black drum eating chunk mullet. Offshore, lane snapper, some large mangrove snapper and a few cobia are being caught on the reefs. With spring getting closer, start keeping an eye on the beach looking for manta rays carrying the tasty cobia with them.

Influx of Water into Lagoon Backwaters

seatrout mosquito lagoon

There has been some shifting winds this past week bringing an influx of water into the back waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. As the wind and higher water does make it a little more challenging to fish in the fish are still there and they are still hungry. Look for the bait to be pushed up a little closer to the shorelines and the fish not that far behind them. Soft plastics, twice baits, spoons and live bait have all been working well.

This week the weather looks to be pretty stable making for some great sight fishing but as we get into the weekend it’s calling for some rainy days.
