The topwater bite has been really good for us this week. Spook style baits (Shad color or light color bellies) fished over and around hydrilla has produced some good fish. We also stuck a few early in the morning on black walking frogs.
This week I had some good fish on Mike Bucca Bull wake baits (Gizzard Shad) and had an absolute giant try and eat the 9” Bullshad but I missed her short strike at the boat. Also, the 9” Bull Glide in Bone worked super slow caught them up too.
At Headwaters we fished the north lake with Baby Torpedos (bullfrog and black). These things work great around hydrilla. If they get stuck give them a rip and they fish pretty weedless. You can fish them a little aggressive with a popping motion and then pause. We got a ton of action on them this week.
We put a bunch of quality fish in the boat on artificial baits this week (and a few on shiners). The chatterbait bite is picking back up in the north lake. The Hogfarmer Spunk Shad is the best chatterbait trailer I can find. It has incredible action and is pretty durable. The bite is better a little later in the morning with this full moon. Most of the bigger fish this week came after 10:30am.
I’ve been out of town (went to Colorado to take my granddaughter back home) and only fished a couple days this week. Last Friday we fished Stick Marsh and caught lots of quality fish. The biggest was 6lbs but we lost a huge fish on a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper (Sprayed Grass) weightless.
We are catching some solid fish this week. The most productive baits are Zman Poppin Shadz (Mud Minnow and White) 5”, Bass Assassin Skunk Ape (St John’s Special), Bone color Spooks, Luckycraft Gunfish 115 (Gold Shiner) and BA RSB Worms (Gooseberry and Plum Apple). The Mike Bucca Bullrat put 3 solid fish in the boat so far this week. Half ounce golden shiner Jackhammers with Spunk Shad trailers is a must throw bait at Headwaters.
Dang it’s hot out there! This week, we’ve been fishing Headwaters and Garcia, and it’s been all about the punch! We punched hydrilla edges next to deep water (4-8 feet) using an ounce and a quarter weight with a Bass Assassin Skunk Ape (Gravedigger and Blueberry).
This week, on Headwaters Lake, the early bite was really good for us throwing hollow body frogs in tan or white. A bunch of the fish we caught choked the frog down the hatch. When the topwater bite slowed down we went to punching Bass Assassin Skunk Apes in St John’s color ( black and blue).
