It’s that time of year when the moon gets right and the wahoos fire over on the corner. Dentist Roger Montz, Ron Yampolsky and a few other buddies made the crossing this past week on Roger’s 36’ Yellowfin “Orion.” They checked into West End before putting out some high speed lures and going to work.

Local billfishing team “Wave Paver” was back at again last month, raising blue marlin down south in the Virgin Islands. Over one span of 5 days of fishing they caught 25 blue marlins including a couple big days; 9 one day and 6 another. The previous boat record for blue marlins on the Wave Paver in one day was 5. This trip was equally special as each person on the boat had the chance to reel in a fish.

Brevard county resident, Jeff Thummel is a State Farm Insurance Agent in Palm Bay and an avid angler. Recently he took a trip to Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada with his son Justin in search of Sturgeon.

Last week, with hopes for yellowfin tuna, my long time buddy, Ben Bencivenga, headed across the stream to Rosies in Grand Cay, Bahamas, aboard Captain Britts 26′ SeaVee. The seas didn’t play along, so instead they spent a couple days deep dropping when they could get out.

This week’s edition of “Beyond Brevard & Back” takes us over the Abacos Islands, Bahamas. Every year about this time the Bahamas gets invaded by dozens and dozens of American billfishing teams, including Port Canaveral rigs, looking to catch billfish in a series of tournaments.
