Noah's first beach tarpon

Noah got his first beach tarpon all by himself at 7 years old!

It’s been another good week on the beach. The bait pods holding tarpon, sharks, mackerel, bluefish, a few snook, and silver trout, too. Live Greenies have been excellent baits if you can find them, but we are getting our fair share of fish on Storm Coastal series jerk baits and shrimp rigged on a 1/2 ounce VMC jighead. We’ve been netting greenies from the river around the boat ramps and in the channel, then bringing the bait to the beaches with us in case we can’t find any bait pods to fish. Most of the fish we’ve been finding are roaming the waters from Melbourne beach south to Sebastian Inlet.

The weather looks to be good this week and the bite should continue. Glass minnows should be moving in pretty good so the fish will shift to different baits. Small artificial baits or fishing with the fly rod will be key, but Greenies should still work. Smaller baits are preferable. Snook in the glass minnow pods will eat croakers or spots this time of year along with spots and possibly pinfish. Small artificial lures will also work well — as long as you aren’t fishing in a crowd of people throwing live baits. Pay close attention to the tides and get a pattern down and you can have a great time fishing the beaches!
