Hughey redfish

Warm, dry weather has the bull redfish fired up!

Luckily, the Space Coast has remained very dry. This has helped keep runoff and nutrients from entering the lagoon, thus far also leading to cleaner water — and the bull redfish bite has been very good!

The key this week was finding the large black mullet pods. Black mullet kick up a lot of crabs and shrimp and other forage for a multitude of species. Fishing cut bait has been best — from pinfish, mullet, and ladyfish — they all have been doing well. The artificial bite has definitely been slower and will probably continue to be slow until we do get some rain. With the low water levels the tarpon have been around but very very stubborn and feeding on small baits.

Let’s hope the lagoon continues to stay clear and hopefully we may actually have some grass growth over the next few months.
