This week has been fantastic fishing here on the Space Coast!

The lagoon has been been improving more and more clarity wise, and the fish are on to it, as well! With the cleaner, lower water levels, the fish have definitely been on high alert. Most areas that have any sort of water depth from 2-3 feet have been producing good numbers of fish. The key to getting them to eat has been toning down the size of your leader and bait. Typically, I toss a 25-30lb leader, but with the conditions lately, moving down to 15-20 has definitely been producing more bites.

Anglers can find good numbers of redfish, sea trout, and black drum all hanging around deeper shorelines along the entire Indian River Lagoon. As far as baits, I personally prefer casting artificial. Artificial baits offer the advantage of mobility; covering lots of ground makes it much easier to find the bite.

I’ll start just blind casting the bank with small lures like Gulp shrimp, or Savage Gear shrimp. With more visibility, the more natural looking the better. If I find a good stretch of shoreline where I seemed to have gotten several fish or good action, it doesn’t hurt to free line a live shrimp!

The main key to fishing for the next few weeks will definitely be toning down your leader, bait size, and really slow way down and work deeper areas throughly.
