goliath grouper

Open wide and say AHHHHH! This juvenile Goliath Grouper, AKA Jewfish, inhaled a Z-Man five inch Diezel Minnowz slowly crawled across the bottom near a Spoil Island. You never know what’s going to eat your lure or bait in Fort Pierce!

We’re still seeing lots of action in the Fort Pierce inlet and nearshore areas both north and south of the inlet. Breeder snook are cruising along the jetty rocks and seawalls throughout the inlet. Most of the greenies and pilchards hiding on the rocks are too small to net, but outside the inlet’s mouth and near the beaches the baitfish are big enough to net or sabiki.

Filling your livewell with these delectable (to the finned critters) morsels will almost guarantee you a bent rod — or twenty. Snook and tarpon of all sizes are feeding on them as well as jacks, sharks and barracuda. Don’t be surprised if other fish show up to join the party…

Inshore, the deeper flats are holding trout and jacks, though the better bite for me has been the spoil islands. If you’re able to find a good flowing current (tide-rip) along a rock strewn island you’ll likely catch a bunch of fish. Experiment with lures ranging from three to five inches in length keeping in mind the bite has been better when retrieving the lure very near the bottom. Z-Man Diezel Minnowz are just the ticket right now when rigged on their Snakelockz jighead!
