mahi port canaveral

Fishing this past week has been more about fighting the weather than anything. Missed marine forecast and a bombardment of rain left most rightfully sitting at the dock but for those of us that went and capitalized on the few nice days or few nice hours in between the miserable days we were rewarded with gold. The mahi definitely showed and with the forecast we have this coming week of 10 knts of wind or less it is going to get right.

Last week was a mix of nice mahi, we caught several fish weighing in the mid to high 30 lb range, but in all reality, what is more strange for Canaveral is the number of throwback or just keeper mahi. It’s funny because for years as I have taken customers out fishing when we hook up on a single or a double they are frantically pacing and saying keep it in the water to get all the others. I laugh and tell them, “this is Canaveral, do you see any others?” Let’s get this nice gaffer and keep moving. That hasn’t been the case here lately because we are seeing a lot of small schoolies. While I am a firm believer that mahi size limit needs to increase by several inches and bag limit needs to decrease by several fish, the rules are the rules.

Make sure you are ready with some light tackle rods for these schoolies, because believe it or not, they wizen up quick or better yet catch three or four and move on to some bigger ones.

Fishing is going to be on point this week and I have a strong feeling more than just the mahi fishing is going to be good. It is a simple formula really. A calm ocean allows you to move, and if you are a diverse angler/captain and are able to move, you are going to find opportunities that will result in a great day of fishing.
