surf report

The cold weather will get the pompano on the move! Right now, the main body is along the coastline of Volusia County with the best catches coming off the hard beach area south of the inlet. However, as these cold fronts move through the area and drop the water temperatures, the body of pompano will start moving south into the Cocoa Beach/Melbourne area.

I got out ahead of this last front and was able to find a mix of fish, with whiting and smaller bluefish leading up close to the beach in the first gut. However, the pompano and Spanish mackerel were out far over 100+ yards all either on top of or past the sandbar. Friends that where in other locations said the same: all sitting past the bar. For me, the action on the pompano came with live sandfleas and the whiting all hit small fleas or shrimp. I did try fishing Fish Bites and Fish Gum, only catching smaller fish.

My rig was a standard double drop pompano rig with white pearl beads and and small orange float on the short cast, and double white and purple pearl beads deep with 2/0 circle hooks with enough weight to get out and hold.
