spotted seatrout

The northern and central Indian River Lagoon has had a resurgence of speckled trout this week. Captain Justin Ross and I have been using topwater plugs near mullet pods on the shallow grass flats of the northern Indian River from Scottsmore to Titusville with good success this week. Two of the more productive lures have been the Rapala Skitterwalk in redfish pattern and the Storm Chug Bug in the chartreuse back with chrome sides. Once the fish stop chasing topwater during mid-morning we’ve been switching over to Saltwater Assassin 4 inch Sea Shad tales rigged on a 1/8 to ¼ ounce jig head. Other species we’ve encountered this week are redfish, ladyfish, jack and sailcats. Black drum action remains hit or miss — these fish are moving around a lot right now so staying on top of the school has been difficult on some days. When they decide to cooperate, they have been very easy to catch and most of these fish are running anywhere between 18 to 30 pounds.

Cobia action along the nearshore waters has also turned on. We’ve seen lots of manta rays between Patrick Air Force base and Cocoa Beach pier with cobia following many of them. This action should continue as long as the water temperature stays below 72 degrees. We are looking forward to the next few weeks as the bite should only get better.
