tarpon fishing inshore

This year has been incredible for tarpon fishing — and it seems to only keep getting better! Within the last few weeks the tarpon have really been thick, and that includes some pretty large ones, too!

All three lagoon systems — the Indian, Banana, and Mosquito Lagoon — have been producing well for tarpon. Tarpon are one of my favorite species to catch and my clients lately have been all about it! Most fish have been hanging around the residential canals in and around the mouth of small creeks. These fish are anywhere from 5-25lbs and are a great fight on light tackle. Top water plugs, paddle tail grubs and small minnow imitation lures like the DOA TerroreyeZ have been getting plenty of action!

Those looking for the larger tarpon can find most fish in 3-5 feet of water on the outside of channel edges. Note that these fish will require a larger rod and reel choice. My favorite tarpon setup is a 7-8 ft Star Rod rated for 15-30lb test with a 5-6000 Shimano reel. The line is a critical part, as well. I’m throwing Cortland Braid 20-30lb test with a 50-60lb mono leader. I prefer mono over fluoro due to the added shock, which provides insurance in case my customers forget to “bow to the king.” As far as bait, I’m throwing large top water plugs such as the Rapala Skitterwalk and DOA Baitbuster. Natural colors, such as pearl, black and white, always do better for me. Although these fish will take artificials, a live bait hardly ever gets refused. It’s hard to match the results that a free-lined 10″ mullet on a 4/0 Owner Circle Hook will give you!

Remember to get these fish in as fast as you can and to get them back in the water quickly. Always take care to revive them fully so someone else may have the same opportunity, and remember, if the fish is 40″ or more, never remove it from the water.
