redfish

The weather is changing this week and so is the bite. Our near coastal trips have been producing a variety of fish species including bluefish, jack, redfish, and ladyfish. Live fingerling mullet rigged on a knocker rig or jig head have been the best live bait to use for all of these species.

I also like to have my anglers cast 3 to 5-inch Rapala lures for all of these fish species. The Rapala Subwalk in the moss back shiner, mullet, or pilchard colors seem to be the ones preferred by these fish on most days. The Rapala X-Rap 08 and 10 in the same color patterns have been working as well.

In the lagoons our best action has been on cut mullet or ladyfish this past week. Decent numbers of redfish are coming from naturally vegetated shorelines. Most of these fish are running 24 to 30 inches in size. The 1000 Islands near Cocoa Beach, the area around Dragon Point, Mathers Bridge, and the flats of the middle and south portions of the Mosquito Lagoon are producing for us right now. Fresh cut mullet seem to be worth the effort to catch because they are producing 2 to 1 over frozen bait chunks.

Between Captain Justin and myself we are out fishing with customers almost everyday, so staying in contact with “the bite” hasn’t been a problem. We hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday, and if you are looking to get out and do some fishing please give us a try.
